OpenAI is exploring the development of its own social media application centered on AI-generated images, according to a report by The Verge. The proposed platform, currently in early development, would allow users to view and share images created through OpenAI’s generative tools such as DALL·E, possibly within a social feed format.
“While the project is still in early stages, we’re told there’s an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation that has a social feed,” The Verge reports. “CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project, our sources say. It’s unclear if OpenAI’s plan is to release the social network as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month.”
The concept appears to be inspired by X (formerly Twitter), which now powers xAI’s Grok chatbot with a continuous stream of real-time content. This steady data inflow enhances Grok’s ability to deliver current and relevant responses. OpenAI, currently facing content access restrictions from publishers, seems to be seeking a similar self-sustaining data loop.
With a social network of its own, OpenAI could create a direct pipeline of real-time user-generated data—particularly visual content—to fuel and refine its AI systems. This would not only support its product development but also potentially reposition the company in the competitive AI landscape.
The backdrop to this development includes the long-standing rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Tesla/X CEO Elon Musk. Musk was an early backer of OpenAI, pledging $100 million to the non-profit before parting ways amid disagreements over the company’s direction. Since then, tensions have flared, with Musk founding xAI, suing OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged data misuse, and even launching a failed takeover bid of OpenAI earlier this year.
Amid this ongoing feud, Altman reportedly joked that OpenAI would be happy to buy X for $9.74 billion, highlighting the strategic value of a data-rich platform for AI advancement.
Whether OpenAI’s social network takes off or not, its development underscores the vital role of data access in modern AI infrastructure. As ChatGPT remains the most downloaded app globally, even a modest social layer could offer significant strategic advantages—especially in a sector where real-time user engagement and content are increasingly central to performance.
