Nintendo has confirmed that its highly anticipated next-generation console, the Switch 2, will launch globally on June 5, alongside the release of Mario Kart World, the latest instalment in the iconic racing franchise.
The announcement was made during a Nintendo Direct presentation watched by over a million viewers, where company president Shuntaro Furukawa called the new console “a leap forward” from the original Switch, which has sold over 150 million units since its 2017 debut.
The Switch 2 will retail in the UK at £395, or £429 bundled with Mario Kart World, and includes significant hardware upgrades.
These include a larger 7.9-inch 1080p HDR screen, 256GB internal storage, improved audio, and a new chat button enabling in-game voice conversations.
New software features will allow both Joy-Con controllers to be used as a mouse in select titles, while a built-in camera will display players during gameplay, mimicking video conferencing tools.
The launch lineup boasts several first-party titles including Donkey Kong Bananza and Kirby Air Riders, and major third-party releases like Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
FromSoftware also revealed The Duskbloods, a Switch 2 exclusive set for 2026.
Nintendo confirmed existing Switch titles will be compatible, with some receiving enhanced editions for the new console.
The Switch 2 will face a high bar set by its predecessor, which became the third best-selling console in history.
However, Nintendo has prepared for strong demand, with Furukawa assuring investors that production delays would be minimised.
Analysts note uncertainty remains around potential supply chain impacts from President Donald Trump’s new global tariffs, which could affect component sourcing and manufacturing.
Despite these challenges, early response from fans and investors has been overwhelmingly positive, especially with the return of beloved franchises and long-awaited new titles.
